YouTuber Faces Five-Year Sentence for Delivering Diet Coke to Isolated Tribe
A YouTuber is now facing the possibility of five years in prison after his attempt to deliver a can of Diet Coke to the world’s most isolated tribe nearly cost him his life.
In 2025, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov embarked on a perilous journey to North Sentinel Island, having spent months trying to make contact with the tribe that has remained untouched by modern civilization for millennia.

Polyakov, recognized for his ventures into dangerous territories like Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, had earmarked North Sentinel Island as his ultimate challenge.
After navigating for nine hours on a rubber dinghy, he reached the forbidden island, where he attempted to attract the tribe's attention by blowing a whistle. He left behind a coconut and the Diet Coke can as an offering.

However, just two days later, he was apprehended by authorities after documenting his escapade. His reckless actions could lead to significant legal repercussions.
Indian law strictly forbids any contact with the Sentinelese people, and officials have stated that Polyakov’s actions posed a serious threat not only to himself but also to the tribe.

Survival International, an organization dedicated to protecting Indigenous rights, condemned Polyakov’s stunt as “reckless and idiotic.” Caroline Pearce, the group’s director, emphasized that he endangered both his life and that of the entire Sentinelese community.

Charged with illegally entering a restricted tribal reserve, Polyakov could face up to five years in prison if convicted. His next court date is set for April 29.
The inhabitants of North Sentinel Island utilize spears, bows, and arrows for hunting in their densely forested environment. They have a long history of hostility towards outsiders, a fact that Polyakov seemingly overlooked.

In 2018, John Allen Chau, a 26-year-old missionary, was killed by arrows after he ventured onto the island, believing he was on a divine mission to convert the tribe. Efforts to recover his body were abandoned due to fears of inciting further violence from the Sentinelese.
Additionally, two Indian fishermen were killed in 2006 after accidentally drifting too close to the island.
Interactions with the tribe are typically limited to rare “gift-giving” missions conducted by Indian officials and scientists who leave items like bananas without attempting direct contact.

Other content creators have similarly sought out isolated tribes for viral content. In 2025, an Irish travel influencer gained notoriety for filming a risky encounter with a tribe in Papua, Indonesia, even labeling them “cannibals” in a TikTok video.
The Nelk Boys also faced backlash for their controversial engagement with another tribe, where they offered vapes and alcohol.
