Travis Kelce Explains Media Silence After Chiefs' Playoff Exit

Dec 20 2025

Travis Kelce addressed his absence from media interviews following the Kansas City Chiefs' playoff exit, revealing it stemmed from concern for quarterback Patrick Mahomes rather than the team's loss itself.

During a press conference on December 19, Kelce, 36, explained that he chose silence after the Chiefs' defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, primarily due to Mahomes' injury. “I talked to him afterward. It was before the MRI,” he stated, confirming a brief conversation with Mahomes after the latter suffered an ACL tear during the game.

Kelce emphasized his bond with Mahomes, saying, “That’s my brother. I know everything he’s going through. I just want to keep it personal.” The tight end has been in touch with Mahomes, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season.

The Chiefs' loss marked a significant moment in their season, dropping their record to 6-8 and eliminating them from playoff contention for the first time since 2014. Mahomes’ injury, confirmed as an ACL tear, led to surgery shortly after.

After the game, Kelce declined to speak with reporters, a departure from his usual openness. “Sorry guys, it’s not the time,” he told them in the locker room, promising to engage later in the week.

This decision drew criticism from some commentators, including ESPN's Chris Russo. “How about Kelce on Sunday afternoon?” Russo remarked on December 17. He expressed disappointment over Kelce's refusal to address the media after such a pivotal game, especially considering Mahomes' injury.

Russo highlighted the significance of Mahomes’ situation, suggesting that it could impact the team's future. “You can’t give them three words?” he questioned, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging fans and media who have supported the team throughout the season.

In contrast to his media silence, Kelce later discussed the game on his podcast with brother Jason Kelce. “We got three games left... Chiefs Kingdom, we’re gonna give you everything we got,” he declared, reinforcing his commitment to finish the season strong.

As speculation about his future in the NFL grows amid the Chiefs' struggles, Kelce has not yet announced plans for retirement. He indicated that any decisions would come after the final three games of the season. “I’d rather just keep the focus of the media on this team right now,” he said when asked about possibly playing his last game with Mahomes.

With a wedding to fiancée Taylor Swift on the horizon, Kelce acknowledged this period as a “unique time” in his life, balancing personal milestones with professional challenges.
