Jul 09 2025

Veronica Burton led the Golden State Valkyries with an impressive performance, scoring 21 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out six assists. Kayla Thornton contributed significantly as well, adding 18 points and eight boards, propelling the Valkyries to an 80-61 victory over the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night.

Caitlin Clark, making her return after a five-game absence due to a left groin injury, faced a challenging night. The All-Star captain managed only 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting, as the Fever struggled to find their rhythm, recording their second-lowest point total of the season.

Clark's return to the court followed her participation in practice for the first time since her injury on June 26. Despite the anticipation surrounding her comeback, the Valkyries maintained control throughout the game, leading 41-32 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Kate Martin ignited a surge for Golden State, scoring five consecutive points that extended their lead to 15. Indiana attempted to rally with a 10-1 run, narrowing the gap to 55-50. However, Burton quickly responded with a crucial 3-pointer, halting the Fever's momentum.

Burton's performance peaked when she hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night with 6:32 remaining, pushing the lead to 70-53. Thornton then added to the Valkyries' advantage with a wide-open 3-pointer shortly after, extending the lead to an insurmountable 20 points.

Golden State showcased their shooting prowess, hitting 12 of 32 attempts from beyond the arc, while Indiana struggled with just 6 of 27. Kelsey Mitchell also faced difficulties for the Fever, finishing with only 12 points on 3-of-13 shooting. Makayla Timpson provided some support off the bench with 10 points.

This matchup marked the second meeting between these teams this season; Golden State previously defeated Indiana 88-77 in their first encounter on June 19.
