Zack Short's Walk-Off Single Secures Astros' Victory Over Rangers
In a tense showdown, Zack Short delivered a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning, propelling the Houston Astros to a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday night. The decisive moment came after Christian Walker tied the game with a sacrifice fly, setting the stage for Short's heroics.
Facing Hoby Milner, Short connected on a 1-1 pitch, sending the ball to right field. This pivotal hit followed a series of walks by Robert Garcia, who loaded the bases, creating an opportunity for the Astros to clinch the game.
The Rangers initially took a 4-3 lead when Adolis García hit a single on the first pitch from Bennett Sousa, scoring automatic runner Marcus Semien. This shift in momentum added to the drama of the night.
Earlier in the game, Kyle Higashioka tied it up at 3-3 with a solo home run off Josh Hader in the ninth inning, marking Hader's first blown save after an impressive streak of 25 successful saves this season.
Jose Altuve contributed significantly, hitting his 17th home run—a two-out solo shot in the first inning off Jacob deGrom—tying the game at 1-1 after an unearned run scored on Framber Valdez's wild pitch.
Yainer Diaz added to the Astros' score with his 14th homer, giving Houston a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Mauricio Dubón extended that lead to 3-1 with his sixth home run off Jacob Webb in the seventh.
Semien responded for Texas, hitting his 11th homer in the eighth to narrow the gap to 3-2. Valdez had a strong outing, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out ten batters without issuing any walks over six innings. The Astros have now won all of Valdez's last 12 starts, with him earning victories in nine of those games.
DeGrom also performed well, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings. The Rangers struggled at the plate, striking out 19 times—just two shy of their club record for an extra-inning game.
Short, who entered as a pinch runner in the ninth, had been struggling with a batting average of just .235 before his game-winning hit. Notably, Houston has not lost a season series against their division rival Texas since 2016.
Looking ahead, Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (6-3, 1.62 ERA) is set to start Sunday’s rubber match against Astros right-hander Hunter Brown (9-3, 2.21).
