Athletics Complete Sweep of Royals with 3-2 Victory
In a decisive moment, Nick Kurtz launched a solo home run in the ninth inning, propelling the Athletics to a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.
Kurtz connected with a fastball from Carlos Estévez (2-2), sending the ball 411 feet into right-center for his sixth home run of the season. This win marked the Athletics' first sweep at Kauffman Stadium since September 2016.
T.J. Ferguson (2-2) showcased his skills by retiring all four batters he faced, striking out two to secure the win, while Mason Miller added to his impressive season with two strikeouts for his 14th save.
The Royals, struggling to find their footing, matched their longest losing streak of the season, dropping all six games of their homestand and extending their streak of home series losses to six.
Austin Wynns made an impact with a two-run homer off reliever John Schreiber, tying the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. This marked Wynns' fifth home run and his second in just five games since joining the team from the Cincinnati Reds.
Royals starter Noah Cameron delivered a strong performance, striking out seven batters over five scoreless innings.
In the third inning, Kyle Isbel opened with a double that deflected off first baseman Kurtz's glove. Bobby Witt Jr. broke an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI double, advancing to third on a balk by Jeffrey Springs before scoring on Vinnie Pasquantino's single, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.
As the Athletics faced a 2-0 deficit in the fifth, Lawrence Butler hit a two-out double but was caught stealing third to end the inning. Initially ruled safe by third base umpire Adrian Johnson, the call was quickly overturned, leading to an unsuccessful argument from A's manager Mark Kotsay.
Notably, the Royals have been outscored 44-15 in the sixth inning throughout the season.
The Athletics are set to host the Houston Astros on Monday, kicking off a four-game series.
Meanwhile, RHP Seth Lugo (3-5, 3.18) will take the mound for the Royals as they begin their road series in Texas on Tuesday.
