Aurora FC Adjusts Game Time Amid Extreme Heat Concerns
The kickoff for Aurora FC's match on Sunday has been rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. due to an extreme heat warning, a decision aimed at safeguarding players, staff, and fans alike.
“We just have to try and be as proactive as possible,” stated Saara Hassoun, chief of staff for Aurora FC. “The turf gets significantly hotter than the surrounding air, often by 10-15 degrees, due to the sun’s absorption and reflection.”
This is not the first time Aurora FC has faced high temperatures. During their inaugural season in 2022, the team implemented measures such as large fans and shaded tents for spectators.
On Sunday, tents were again set up along the sidelines, complemented by mandatory hydration breaks during each half. Fans were also permitted to bring sealed, store-bought water into the venue.
“You can always bring an empty water bottle because we do have water fountains available for free throughout the stadium,” Hassoun added.
Meanwhile, the heat did not deter some from enjoying outdoor activities. At Painter Park in South Minneapolis, friends Quinn O'Keefe and Elliot Hicks were engaged in a spirited basketball game despite the soaring temperatures.
“There was a big debate on whether or not to play basketball, but we decided that we’re about it and ball is life, so we had to come out here,” Hicks remarked. “We made sure to bring lots of water.”
“Exactly,” O'Keefe chimed in. “It’s hot, but our hoop dreams are hotter.”
Skateboarders also took to the park, though they acknowledged the need for more frequent water breaks. “I think because it’s so hot today there’s not too many people, which is chill, but the wind is keeping it somewhat manageable,” said skateboarder Sean Pearson.
