Brewers Dominate Phillies 17-7 as Manager Thomson Ejected

May 31 2025

Rhys Hoskins showcased his power against his former team, hitting two three-run homers as the Milwaukee Brewers overwhelmed the Philadelphia Phillies 17-7 on Saturday. Jackson Chourio contributed significantly with four hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs, while Christian Yelich also added four hits to the Brewers' impressive tally of 23 hits.

This marked Hoskins' 12th career multi-homer game, a notable achievement since it was his first since 2022 when he played for the Phillies. Chourio's performance included a three-run homer and a two-run single, further solidifying Milwaukee's offensive dominance.

Chad Patrick (3-4) pitched effectively, allowing just two runs and five hits over six innings, helping the Brewers secure their sixth consecutive victory. In stark contrast, Philadelphia's starter Jesus Luzardo (5-1) struggled significantly, lasting only 3 1/3 innings while surrendering 12 earned runs and 12 hits, including both of Hoskins' homers. Luzardo's performance places him among a rare group of pitchers in MLB history, being just the 12th to allow 12 earned runs in such a short outing, the first since Jordan Yamamoto in 2020.

Despite the loss, the Phillies managed some offensive highlights. Alec Bohm hit a solo homer, Brandon Marsh contributed with a two-run shot, and Kyle Schwarber recorded three hits, including an RBI double. However, this defeat marked Philadelphia's third consecutive loss.

In a notable moment during the game, Phillies manager Rob Thomson was ejected in the fourth inning after arguing a balk call made by third base umpire Derek Thomas. Following an extended discussion, second base umpire Dan Iassogna issued the ejection.

Hoskins' first homer came off a 2-1 fastball from Luzardo, propelling Milwaukee to an early 4-0 lead after just 13 pitches. Luzardo had previously not allowed more than three runs in any of his first 11 starts for Philadelphia but faced immediate challenges against the Brewers.

Looking ahead, Brewers left-hander Jose Quintana (4-1, 2.65 ERA) is set to face Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (4-0, 2.97) in the series finale on Sunday.
