Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch is turning a new page after a tumultuous encounter with the Kansas City Chiefs. Following a fight that led to his suspension, Branch, 24, has chosen to embrace a spiritual path, announcing plans for baptism.
On October 28, Branch revealed to reporters that he felt compelled to get baptized “to turn over a new leaf.” The ceremony is set for October 29, marking a significant moment in his personal journey.
“I feel like I need to be saved by God, just going through a time like that,” Branch stated, reflecting on the recent events that have unfolded in his life.
Branch expressed that this decision was not spontaneous; rather, it was something he had contemplated for some time. “It was perfect timing,” he noted, indicating a sense of urgency in his spiritual quest.

According to reports, Branch sought guidance from Flem Robert Peacher VI, who not only provides spiritual counsel but also boards Branch’s Rottweiler, Bruno. Peacher shared insights about their impactful conversation on social media, which took place shortly after the fight on October 12.
“Today my brother showed up to K9 to pick up his Rottweiler ‘Bruno’ from our boarding hotel,” Peacher wrote on Instagram. “From there him & I had a great healthy conversation which ultimately led to me sharing my faith & the gospel of Jesus Christ with him. Brian gladly received the message, repented & fully gave his life to Jesus Christ on tonight!!! Hallelujah Jesus is worthy to be praised without hesitation he asked, when can I be baptized?”
Branch’s suspension came as a result of striking Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster during a heated moment following the Chiefs' 30-17 victory over the Lions. The incident escalated quickly, involving players and coaches from both teams, including Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
When asked if he believed his actions warranted a suspension, Branch paused before responding with laughter. “I dealt with the consequences they gave me. Moving forward now,” he said, indicating a desire to focus on the future.
He acknowledged that the suspension has fueled his motivation as the Lions gear up for the second half of the season. “It’s another chip on my shoulder they just added,” Branch remarked. “I do want to apologize for what I did; that’s something I don’t condone and will never happen again.”
Lions safeties coach Jim O’Neil anticipates an even more driven Branch when the team faces the Minnesota Vikings on November 2. “I’m really excited to see how he takes the field on Sunday,” O’Neil said. “It’s great to have him back. He’s one of my all-time favorite people and players I ever coached.”
O’Neil further emphasized Branch’s talent, stating, “It’s scary. Scary because he’s clearly one of the best players at his position in the league.”
In the aftermath of the fight, Branch explained his perspective on the incident, noting that he felt Smith-Schuster had blocked him unfairly near the end of the game. “I could’ve got hurt off of that play,” he admitted. “I still shouldn’t have done that.”
