Byron Buxton Selected for All-Star Game and Home Run Derby
Byron Buxton's presence in the Minnesota Twins lineup has been a game-changer this season, evidenced by a striking statistic: 73. This number represents the games he has started, marking a significant milestone in his 11-year career. At age 31, Buxton's health has finally aligned with his talent, allowing him to showcase his skills consistently.
"It's a monumental return," said manager Rocco Baldelli. "He's been one of the top players in baseball. To have prime Buxton available every day is a whole different deal." The impact of Buxton's performance is palpable, transforming the dynamics of the team.
Buxton's second All-Star Game selection is particularly meaningful, as it coincides with the festivities taking place in his home state of Georgia. "Going back home to do something like this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing," he remarked, reflecting on the significance of the event. His previous All-Star appearance was in 2022 in Los Angeles.
Family plays a central role in Buxton's excitement. His youngest son, Baire, was not yet born during his last All-Star outing. The event at Truist Park is just a three-hour drive from his hometown of Baxley. Additionally, Buxton's participation in the Home Run Derby fulfills a special wish from his eldest son, Brix, who looks forward to being part of the action.
"Out of everybody there, that's what he wants and cares about," Buxton shared. "It's the small things that add up to the big ones." This sentiment underscores the personal significance of the event for him and his family.
Buxton's performance this season has been nothing short of impressive. With five of his 20 home runs leading off games, he has tied Chuck Knoblauch for fourth-most leadoff homers in Twins history. He stands out as one of only six players in Major League Baseball with at least 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases this season.
Ranking among the top 10 American League batters in several categories—including slugging percentage, OPS, and stolen bases—Buxton continues to demonstrate his all-around capabilities. His defensive prowess remains Gold Glove-caliber, and he boasts a perfect record on stolen-base attempts this year, further indicating his physical readiness.
On June 11, Buxton hit a remarkable home run measured at 479 feet, marking the longest of his career and the second-longest in MLB this season. Despite facing a concussion earlier this season that sidelined him for 11 games, he has managed to stay healthy and productive, with only two designated hitter appearances this year.
"Once you get those at-bats and get back into the groove of things, you tend to start taking off," Buxton noted, emphasizing the importance of consistent play.
The Twins entered their series against the Chicago Cubs with a record of 43-47, highlighting how crucial Buxton's contributions are to the team's success. "He does it at the highest level," teammate Carlos Correa stated. "He's fun. He's electric, full of energy, and our team needs that."
