Chicago Blackhawks Reveal Ambitious Plans for Fifth Third Arena
The Chicago Blackhawks presented new renderings on Tuesday for the ambitious expansion of Fifth Third Arena, located just a stone's throw from the United Center. This community ice rink, which opened its doors in 2017, has been undergoing significant renovations since May 2022.
Upon completion in January 2026, the revamped Fifth Third Arena will encompass over 250,000 square feet dedicated to community hockey. The facility will boast cutting-edge training amenities and adaptable spaces designed for elite athletes, emerging talents, and future stars, according to statements from the Blackhawks.

"Through the Fifth Third Arena expansion, we are creating the epicenter of hockey in the Midwest," stated Danny Wirtz, chairman and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks. "This venue is where NHL superstars train alongside rising talent, creating an environment where championship dreams can take flight."
With expectations to attract more than 1.5 million visitors annually, the Blackhawks anticipate that the renovated arena will stimulate economic growth in the Near West Side. It aims to become the premier destination for youth and amateur hockey, seamlessly integrated with the 1901 Project development plan surrounding the United Center.

Fifth Third Arena will continue to serve as the official training facility for the Blackhawks while also becoming the permanent home for the Chicago Steel, a team in the United States Hockey League acquired by the Wirtz family in 2023.
The newly unveiled features include:

The Championship Arena, one of two new rinks, will feature stadium-style seating and hospitality areas accommodating 2,000 spectators. It will also include a state-of-the-art scoreboard and exclusive party decks, marking it as the new home for the Chicago Steel.
Centennial Hall will honor a century of Blackhawks history and will house the new Blackhawks Hall of Fame permanently.

Rocky's Bar, named in tribute to late Blackhawks Chairman Rocky Wirtz, will anchor the food and beverage offerings at Fifth Third Arena, featuring a premium cocktail menu alongside curated food selections.
Designed with families in mind, lounges at Fifth Third Arena will offer flexible workspaces, quiet areas with Wi-Fi access, and comfortable seating arrangements.

The Patio, an open-air venue on the upper level of the arena, promises stunning views of the Chicago skyline and the future 1901 campus. The Blackhawks envision The Patio as an ideal location for pre- or post-game cocktails, business meetings, or simply enjoying sports on television, with a capacity for 150 guests.
A commemorative sidewalk known as the Walk of Fame along Jackson Boulevard will celebrate milestone moments and legendary players from the Blackhawks franchise. Engraved plaques will honor the six Stanley Cup-winning teams and Hall of Fame inductees.

As plans progress, excitement builds around what this expansion means for both the Blackhawks and the local community.
