Chicago Fire FC Unveils Ambitious $650 Million Stadium Project
Chicago Fire FC has revealed its intention to construct a new soccer-specific stadium in the South Sloop neighborhood, a project that promises to reshape the local sports landscape.
The proposed site, known as "The 78," is strategically located along the Chicago River, bordered by Roosevelt Road, Clark Street, and 16th Street. This prime location is set to host an open-air stadium designed to accommodate up to 22,000 fans on a natural grass field.
With an estimated cost of $650 million, the project will primarily be funded by team owner Joe Mansueto, who is also the founder of Morningstar Financial Services. However, Related Midwest, the developer involved, may seek tax increment financing (TIF) to support the necessary infrastructure improvements for the site. This aspect raises questions about the use of taxpayer funds in the development process.
Construction is slated to commence this fall, with an ambitious timeline aiming for completion ahead of the 2028 Major League Soccer season. This timeline coincides with the expiration of the team's lease at Soldier Field later this year.

The new stadium not only signifies a pivotal moment for the Chicago Fire but also represents a significant alteration to the cityโs skyline, promising to enhance both the sporting experience and urban landscape.
As plans progress, the community and fans alike are eager to see how this development unfolds and what it means for soccer in Chicago.
