Danica Patrick Critiques Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show Role

Oct 01 2025

Danica Patrick, the former race car driver, ignited controversy with her recent comments regarding Bad Bunny's selection as the performer for the Super Bowl LX halftime show.

On September 29, Patrick expressed her discontent on social media, stating, “Oh fun. No songs in English should not be allowed at one of America’s highest rated television events of the year… not just for sports.”

The reaction was swift, with many users responding directly to her post. One user quipped, “What are you gonna do about it? Threaten to drive NASCAR again?”

Another pointed out, “You do know he’s American right?” This comment highlights a key fact: Bad Bunny, born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, is indeed a U.S. citizen by birth.

While some supported Patrick's stance, others pushed back. One commenter noted, “Don’t forget the guy wouldn’t do shows in the States because of ICE yet he’ll perform on SNL and at the SB.”

In a previous interview with i-D Magazine, Bad Bunny expressed concerns about performing in American cities due to fears of ICE raids targeting his fans. “I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the U.S.,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Despite the backlash from Patrick and others, Bad Bunny framed his Super Bowl appearance as a celebration of his heritage. “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” he stated after the announcement on September 28. “This is for my people, my culture, and our history.”

He also shared an anecdote about receiving the news from Jay-Z while working out. “I was literally in the middle of a workout when Jay-Z called me,” he recounted. “I just did 100 pull-ups. I was like [excited].”

In addition to his Super Bowl performance, Bad Bunny is set to host and perform on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live on October 4th.

Criticism of his halftime show booking has also emerged from conservative commentators who have questioned his lyrics and activism. Figures like Benny Johnson and Ryan Fournier have voiced their disapproval.

However, this scrutiny is not new for Bad Bunny. He has consistently topped Spotify charts as the most-streamed artist globally for three consecutive years and boasts multiple Grammy awards. His performances span major events like Coachella and the Grammys.

Patrick, who retired from racing in 2018, is no stranger to controversy herself. Known for her outspoken views on various topics, her latest remarks add to her history of polarizing statements.

Regardless of the mixed reactions, Bad Bunny remains committed to honoring his roots during his upcoming performance.
