Doug Gottlieb's Frustration Boils Over After Close Loss

Dec 05 2025

After a heartbreaking 80-78 loss to Robert Morris University, Doug Gottlieb, head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball team, displayed his frustration in a manner reminiscent of legendary coach Bob Knight. As he exited the court on December 4, Gottlieb, 49, hurled a chair in anger, a moment that captured the intensity of the game’s final minutes.

Green Bay squandered an 11-point lead in the last 3:54 of the match, leading to Gottlieb's outburst. “I’m encouraged by our effort and our defense and how we executed,” he stated in the postgame press conference. “That was just embarrassing how we lost the game.”

The closing moments were marred by critical turnovers and fouls from Green Bay, compounded by three successful three-pointers from Robert Morris in the final 2:21. Despite showing potential throughout the game, Gottlieb's disappointment was palpable as he addressed the media.

“We didn’t defend the three-point line,” he remarked, highlighting a key area of concern. “And we have guys that are not listening. So it happens. We lost the game.” His frustration continued to surface as he added, “Yeah, we’re actually a good basketball team. I know it’s surprising to people. We’re actually pretty good, but we played like idiots at the end of the game.”

Gottlieb's chair-throwing incident echoed Knight's infamous moment during a 1985 game against Purdue, which became a defining image of Knight's fiery coaching style. While Knight had over four decades of experience on the sidelines, Gottlieb is still navigating his second year as a head coach after transitioning from a controversial career as an ESPN analyst.

In his inaugural season, Green Bay struggled with a dismal 4-28 record, ranking among the lowest in Division I basketball. This season, however, they have already matched last year's win total with a current record of 4-6. A victory against Robert Morris could have propelled them to a .500 standing.

Last season, Gottlieb faced criticism for his comments regarding the strength of his team's schedule during a challenging 20-game losing streak. “Part of the reason I want to play better teams is it’s two degrees and snowing outside,” he explained in a December 2024 press conference. “You know? I don’t really like the idea of ‘Nobody U’ coming in here. What do we learn playing a game where we win by 20? But there’s a methodology to it, and I’m going to have to adjust moving forward.”

A week later, he sought to clarify his remarks on his radio show, emphasizing that he viewed his opponents as formidable challenges rather than easy wins. “My thing has always been, to go to a game in Green Bay, Wisconsin, I’ve got to give you a reason to go,” he said. “I was speaking in a place a week ago Wednesday where I was discussing how difficult our schedule has been. And how everyone we played was either better than us or capable of beating us.”
