Giants' Heliot Ramos Shines in 3-2 Series Sweep Over Athletics
In a nail-biting finish, Heliot Ramos kicked off the game with a leadoff homer and later delivered a crucial go-ahead single in the eighth inning, helping the San Francisco Giants clinch a 3-2 win over the Athletics on Sunday. This victory marked a clean sweep for the Giants in the three-game series, which was the first time these two teams faced off since the Athletics made their move from Oakland to Sacramento.
Things were looking a bit grim for the Giants as they trailed 2-1 heading into the eighth. But then, LaMonte Wade Jr. stepped up with a leadoff triple, setting the stage for Patrick Bailey, who tied the game with a single. Ramos then came through with a one-out single to left, bringing Bailey home from second and turning the tide against A's reliever Tyler Ferguson, who took the loss.
Randy Rodriguez picked up the win for the Giants, tossing a scoreless eighth inning, while Ryan Walker closed it out, earning his eighth save of the season. Earlier in the game, Ramos had given the Giants an early 1-0 lead with his homer off A's starter Jeffrey Springs. However, the Athletics responded in the fourth inning when Lawrence Butler hit a two-out single with the bases loaded, putting them ahead 2-1.
Springs had a solid outing, allowing just two hits and striking out five over 6 2/3 innings, impressively retiring 20 batters in a row after Ramos' homer. On the flip side, Justin Verlander, the Giants' starter, struggled a bit, giving up two runs in four innings and still searching for his first win of the season after ten starts—his longest winless stretch to kick off a season in his two-decade MLB career.
In a strategic move, Giants' No. 9 hitter Christian Koss laid down a bunt in the eighth to advance Bailey to second, which ultimately set up Ramos' game-winning hit. Verlander, meanwhile, had a tough time on the mound, walking five batters and striking out just one.
Looking ahead, the Athletics are set to start RHP JT Ginn (1-1, 4.61 ERA) on Monday as they kick off a four-game series at home against the Los Angeles Angels. The Giants, on the other hand, will have LHP Robbie Ray (6-0, 3.04 ERA) taking the mound in their first game of a three-game set against Kansas City.
