Greta Myers Pursues Olympic Dreams in Speed Skating

Speeding across the ice, Greta Myers embodies the essence of competitive spirit. "Speed skating is honestly more of an art," she explains, emphasizing the importance of efficiency and maintaining top speed without losing control.

Growing up in Minnesota, Myers began her journey on hockey skates, playing for both Centennial and Roseville. A pivotal moment occurred at the Roseville Oval, where her future took a decisive turn.

"During practice one day, Andre Zukov, the coach of the high-performance speed skating team, approached me. He had a different mentality, being Russian. He said, 'Come speed skate, your country needs you.' I was just 12 and thought, 'Okay,'" Myers recalled.

Her natural speed made the transition seamless. Competing internationally soon followed, with Myers quickly establishing herself as a formidable athlete. Now based in Salt Lake City, she dedicates herself fully to the sport.

"It's a full-time job for me, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to travel the world and compete against the best," she shared during a brief offseason visit to Roseville this spring. "It's honestly an amazing thing to do."

From an early age, the dream of becoming an Olympian fueled her ambitions, though she initially wasn't sure which sport would lead her there. "I grew up watching Michael Phelps and all the gymnastics girls. Seeing them with medals around their necks truly inspired me to achieve greatness in sports," Myers reflected.

With the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy, approaching rapidly, Myers is eager to secure her spot on the team. A recent victory in a milestone mass start race has invigorated her confidence.

"Winning that race was really exciting for me. It gave me a great boost of confidence that I could perform well at the games when it truly matters. If I get the opportunity, I’ll definitely take it because I know I can do well," she stated, looking ahead with determination.

As Myers continues her journey toward Olympic glory, her story serves as a testament to dedication and passion in the pursuit of athletic excellence.
