Charlie Morton Joins Baltimore Orioles on a $15 Million Deal
In a recent development, the Baltimore Orioles have secured a major deal with veteran right-hander Charlie Morton. The seasoned player agreed to a lucrative one-year contract worth $15 million, marking a significant addition to the Orioles' roster.
At 41 years old, Morton brings a wealth of experience to the team, notably remembered for his standout performance in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series with the Houston Astros. With an impressive 18th major league season ahead of him, Morton is poised to play a crucial role in filling a key position in Baltimore's rotation.
Notably, this offseason has seen the Orioles making strategic moves to strengthen their pitching lineup. Alongside Morton, the team also inked a deal with 35-year-old Tomoyuki Sugano from Japan, signing him on a one-year contract valued at $13 million. These signings come in the wake of the departure of Corbin Burnes, the team's ace in 2024, who recently sealed a substantial $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Morton boasts an impressive career record of 138-123, showcasing his consistency and skill on the field. In his previous season with the Atlanta Braves, Morton delivered a solid performance, pitching 165 1/3 innings and achieving an 8-10 record with a 4.19 ERA. His track record positions him as one of the select few pitchers to have made at least 30 starts in every full season since 2018, excluding the shortened 2020 season due to the pandemic.
Over the past four years with the Braves, Morton has maintained a commendable record, going 45-34 with a 3.87 ERA. His experience extends beyond Atlanta, having also played for notable teams like the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
