Joey Chestnut Returns to Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
Joey Chestnut confirmed his return to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, a staple of American summer festivities, after missing last year’s event due to a dispute over vegan meat endorsements.
“This event means the world to me,” Chestnut stated on Instagram, expressing his deep connection to the contest. “It’s a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life.”
Last year, Chestnut faced a ban from the annual July 4 competition after signing an endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, known for its plant-based products. This decision led to a significant rift with Nathan’s.
“While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs,” he clarified. “To be clear: Nathan’s is the only hot dog company I’ve ever worked with.”
He acknowledged the misunderstandings that arose, stating, “I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I’m grateful we’ve been able to find common ground.”
In 2023, Chestnut reclaimed his title by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns, marking his eighth consecutive victory. “I’m excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands! Stay hungry!” he added enthusiastically.

During his absence, Patrick Bertoletti took home the men’s division title by eating 58 hot dogs and buns, while Miki Sudo won the women’s division with 51. In 2021, Chestnut set a world record by devouring 76 hot dogs and buns.
A spokesperson for Major League Eating (MLE) revealed that the ban stemmed from Chestnut’s decision to endorse “another hot dog brand” instead of Nathan’s. “We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” MLE stated.
The organization further explained their efforts to accommodate Chestnut and his management team, noting that they had agreed to an appearance fee and allowed him to compete in an unbranded contest on Labor Day. “For nearly two decades we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions. However, it seems that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different hot dog brand over our long-time relationship,” they concluded.
The next Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is scheduled for Friday, July 4, at the corner of Surf and Stillwell in Coney Island.
