Joey Chestnut Set to Compete in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Jun 16 2025

Joey Chestnut is gearing up for a return to the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest this Fourth of July at Coney Island, Brooklyn. The 16-time champion, who sat out last year’s event, is ready to reclaim his title.

Last year, Chestnut opted for a different path, competing at Fort Bliss in Texas and facing off against former champion Takeru Kobayashi in a separate hot dog eating challenge. This absence opened the door for Patrick Betoletti from Chicago, who seized the opportunity and won the coveted Yellow Mustard Belt by consuming 58 hot dogs and buns.

In the women’s division, Miki Sudo made headlines by setting a record with 51 hot dogs and buns, continuing her dominance since 2014, except for 2021 when she took a break due to pregnancy. The stakes are high, with winners receiving a $20,000 cash prize.

Chestnut still holds the all-time record of 76 hot dogs and buns, achieved in 2021. His excitement about returning is palpable. "I'm thrilled to be returning to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. This event means the world to me," he expressed on social media. "While I have partnered with various companies, including those in the plant-based sector, my love for hot dogs remains unchanged. Nathan's is the only hot dog company I've ever worked with." His enthusiasm reflects a deep connection to this annual tradition.

The contest has been a staple at Nathan's Famous since 1916, drawing competitors from across the globe. This year, participants from the U.S., England, Canada, Brazil, the Czech Republic, and Australia will compete for the title on July 4. The women's competition kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by the men's at 12:30 p.m.

In keeping with tradition, Nathan's Famous will donate 100,000 hot dogs to the Food Bank for New York City. "The Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is the highlight of summer and one of our nation's greatest holiday traditions," remarked Phil McCann of Nathan's Famous.

Major League Eating Chair George Shea added, "This contest stands as an enduring beacon of freedom for our nation and the world. We look forward to watching the greatest eaters compete on this celebrated platform." The anticipation builds as fans prepare for another thrilling showdown on Coney Island.
