Jonah Heim's Late Hit Secures Rangers' Series Sweep Over Athletics
In a decisive moment, Jonah Heim's fly ball found its way between two defenders in shallow left field, allowing Wyatt Langford to score from first base. This pivotal hit propelled the Texas Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday night, completing a series sweep.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Heim connected with rookie Jack Perkins (0-1), as shortstop Jacob Wilson and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom converged on the ball. The miscommunication led to Wilson dropping his head and arms, resulting in the ball falling behind him.
Jon Gray (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one hit over two innings in relief of Patrick Corbin. Gray's activation earlier that day marked his return from a broken arm sustained on March 15, which prompted Texas to sign Corbin shortly thereafter.
Robert Garcia closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning, securing his eighth save in 11 opportunities.
Corey Seager put Texas on the board first in the third inning, launching a 3-2 fastball to dead center for his 15th home run of the season.
The Athletics responded in the sixth inning when Nick Kurtz doubled into right field, scoring Brent Rooker, who ended an 0-for-15 slump with a two-out single.
Seager's performance extended his on-base streak to 24 games, marking the longest active streak in the American League.
Texas' pitching staff has now allowed two runs or fewer in seven consecutive games, tying a franchise record set back in September 1983.
Looking ahead, Rangers RHP Nathan Eovaldi (7-3, 1.58) is scheduled to make his first start after the All-Star break on Friday at home against Atlanta LHP Joey Wentz (2-1, 5.71). Meanwhile, Athletics RHP Luis Severino (3-11, 5.10) will kick off a weekend series at Houston on Friday.
