Lynx Triumph Over Liberty 83-71 in WNBA Finals Rematch
On Sunday, the Minnesota Lynx defeated the New York Liberty 83-71, with Kayla McBride leading the charge with 18 points and DiJonai Carrington contributing 15. This matchup marked the first encounter at Barclays Center since New York clinched the WNBA Finals title last fall.
In a busy schedule ahead, the two teams are set to clash three times within the next nine days. New York will face back-to-back games on the West Coast before heading to Minnesota for a Saturday showdown. The Lynx will have a brief respite until that game.
Both teams faced challenges with key players absent; New York was without Breanna Stewart due to a knee injury, while Minnesota missed Napheesa Collier because of an ankle issue. Despite these setbacks, the game showcased competitive spirit.
New York held a 47-40 lead early in the third quarter, but Minnesota responded with a powerful 24-7 run over six minutes, highlighted by Natisha Hiedeman's three-pointer that pushed the Lynx ahead 64-54. During this pivotal stretch, Minnesota connected on five three-pointers and executed a three-point play, shifting the momentum decisively.
Entering the fourth quarter with a 66-57 advantage, Minnesota maintained control, propelled by Carrington, who joined the Lynx just last week in a trade with Dallas. Natasha Cloud led New York with 14 points, but the Liberty's bench was outscored 34-19 by their opponents.
The first quarter was lively, with Minnesota edging ahead 25-24. However, the pace slowed in the second quarter, allowing New York to take a narrow 38-36 lead into halftime. Courtney Williams made her mark with eight points, seven assists, and four rebounds during the first half for the Lynx.

In a notable move, Minnesota acquired former Liberty guard Jaylyn Sherrod on Saturday after New York released her to make room for Emma Meesseman. Before the game, a highlight reel honoring Sherrod received an enthusiastic response from fans.
Halftime featured the induction of former star Tari Phillips into New York's ring of honor. Additionally, about two dozen former players were recognized at the end of the first quarter, with Teresa Weatherspoon receiving the loudest cheers during her introduction.
