Marlins Overcome Phillies 8-3, Ending Home Losing Streak

Jun 17 2025

On Tuesday night, the Miami Marlins showcased their offensive prowess, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 at home. This victory not only snapped the Marlins' five-game home losing streak but also halted the Phillies' five-game winning streak.

Eric Wagaman and Jesús Sánchez each contributed to the scoreboard with home runs, while Xavier Edwards shone with three hits. Javier Sanoja added to the Marlins' success with a triple and a single, demonstrating a well-rounded team effort.

In a surprising move, Phillies manager Rob Thomson benched outfielder Nick Castellanos due to "an inappropriate comment" made after he was substituted during Monday's game. This decision ended Castellanos' impressive streak of 236 consecutive starts.

The turning point came in the sixth inning when Edwards delivered an RBI single, capping a three-run rally that shifted the score to 5-3 in favor of Miami. Reliever Tanner Banks, who took over for starter Jesús Luzardo, allowed an RBI groundout from Kyle Stowers and Sanoja's run-scoring triple, contributing to the Marlins' surge.

Sánchez extended the lead further with a solo home run off reliever Joe Ross in the seventh inning, marking his seventh homer of the season.

Freddy Tarnok (1-0) earned the win after pitching effectively in the sixth inning. Luzardo (6-3) struggled, giving up four runs and six hits over five-plus innings, while striking out four and walking four.

The Phillies initially took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, thanks to run-scoring singles from Johan Rojas and Kyle Schwarber. However, Wagaman's two-run blast in the second inning had already put Miami on the board.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill retired the first nine batters he faced before Trea Turner homered for the second consecutive game, hitting a drive over the left-field wall to lead off the fourth inning. Quantrill ultimately allowed three runs and four hits in four-plus innings.

To accommodate viewers of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers, Tuesday's game start was moved up by 30 minutes.

After Luzardo walked both Wagaman and Norby to begin the sixth, Nick Fortes advanced them with a groundout. This set up Wagaman and Norby to score the tying and go-ahead runs for Miami.

The Marlins finished with a total of 13 hits, marking their sixth game in the last ten where they achieved ten or more hits.

Looking ahead, LHP Ranger Suárez (5-1, 2.32) is slated to start for the Phillies on Wednesday, while the Marlins have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
