Marlins Triumph Over Padres in High-Scoring Affair
Agustín Ramírez delivered a standout performance on Wednesday, achieving the first four-hit game of his career, which included a pivotal home run and a go-ahead two-run single, propelling the Miami Marlins to a 10-8 victory against the San Diego Padres.
Ramírez's impressive stats for the night included four hits in five at-bats, four RBIs, and two runs scored. His teammates Eric Wagaman and Otto Lopez also contributed significantly, each recording three hits, with Lopez hitting a crucial three-run homer. Additionally, Javier Sanoja showcased his skills with two doubles.
On the mound, Ronny Henriquez (3-1) secured the win after pitching two innings, while Calvin Faucher closed the game in the ninth for his third save. Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara struggled through four innings, allowing six runs. This outing marked a continuation of his recent difficulties, having lost his previous seven starts. The 2022 AL Cy Young winner had missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery.
For the Padres, reliever Jason Adam (5-1) faced disappointment as he took the loss after the team squandered a five-run lead, just a day after staging a comeback from a six-run deficit.
The game shifted dramatically in the fifth inning when the Marlins chased starter Kyle Hart, who had been recalled earlier that day. This came after the Padres had scored five runs in the fourth inning, establishing a 6-1 lead.
Gavin Sheets made his mark for the Padres by hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning, giving them an 8-7 advantage.
However, Ramírez's two-run single in the eighth inning turned the tide for Miami. Following this, Wagaman hit a double that allowed Victor Mesa Jr. to score, although Ramírez was thrown out at home plate during the play.
In an unsettling moment during the eighth inning, Miami's Connor Norby was struck in the head by an 87 mph changeup from Adam, causing him to fall to the ground momentarily; fortunately, he remained in the game.
Since making his MLB debut on April 21, Ramírez has been performing well, currently batting .262 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs.
The Marlins will return home to face the San Francisco Giants on Friday, with Cal Quantrill (3-4, 6.09 ERA) set to pitch against Kyle Henderson (0-1, 3.86) of the Giants. Meanwhile, San Diego will host Pittsburgh on Friday, featuring Nick Pivetta (5-2, 2.72) against Mitch Keller (1-6, 3.66) of the Pirates.
