Meet Donovan Jackson: The Minnesota Vikings' First-Round Draft Pick

Apr 25 2025

The Minnesota Vikings have officially revamped their interior offensive line by selecting guard Donovan Jackson in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night. This move marks a significant step in the team's offseason strategy.

While many fans were hoping for a trade down to gather more picks or to snag a defensive back to bolster the secondary, the Vikings opted to use the 24th pick to provide presumed starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy with some much-needed protection.

So, who exactly is Donovan Jackson? Here’s everything you need to know about the Vikings' first-round pick.

At just 22 years old, Jackson is set to turn 23 during the upcoming NFL season. The NFL scouting profile describes him as standing 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 315 pounds, with impressive 33.5-inch arms. His physical attributes are ideal for a guard, showcasing a "thick chest, broad hips, long arms, and big hands."

Jackson's college career unfolded over four years at Ohio State University, where he made a name for himself. He became the starting left guard during his sophomore year and maintained that position through his junior year. In his senior season, he even shifted to left tackle due to an injury to a teammate.

During his time with the Buckeyes, Jackson earned first-team All-Big Ten honors three times and was recognized as a first-team All-American in his senior year. He capped off his college journey by winning a National Championship, solidifying his status as a top prospect.

In the Vikings' lineup, Jackson is expected to take on the left guard position, which is where he played the majority of his college snaps. This position is considered the weakest link on Minnesota's offensive line. With starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw currently recovering from a knee injury, Jackson may serve as a temporary starter there until Darrisaw is ready to return. However, the Vikings might also choose to keep Jackson at his natural position and utilize a swing tackle like Justin Skule in Darrisaw's absence.

Last season, Blake Brandel held down the left guard spot for the Vikings. While he performed adequately, he was not particularly standout. It’s likely that Brandel will transition back to a backup role, similar to Skule, who also has the potential to play multiple positions.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell expressed his admiration for Jackson during the predraft process, particularly after they reviewed game film together during a visit to Minnesota. "I love everything about his play style and size. He’s got length and power," O'Connell stated. "The little things that stand out about a player, like his willingness to jump over to the left tackle spot and compete against the third pick in tonight's draft, really impressed me. He didn’t have to do that in a year where he was being evaluated for the draft, so we’re very excited about him."

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also commended Jackson's versatility and unselfishness in making the switch to tackle. "He’s an incredibly poised, talented athlete in pass protection," Adofo-Mensah noted. "He’s a strong player who can anchor, move people in the run game, and sustain throughout the down. He’s also incredibly intelligent."

Jackson himself is eager to join the Vikings and start contributing. "I’m excited for this offense and this organization because of how explosive and dynamic it is," he said. "I can’t wait to learn from the guys in the o-line room who have been in the game for so long and have done it the right way. I’m looking forward to growing from that experience."

Vikings fans can also take comfort in knowing that Jackson has no issues blocking for McCarthy, his former rival at Michigan. "I met with him briefly during my visit, and he mentioned it a little, but we agreed to leave that rivalry in college," Jackson shared. "We’re focused on winning here."

With Donovan Jackson now on board, the Minnesota Vikings are looking to strengthen their offensive line and enhance their performance in the upcoming season.
