Minnesota Lady Loons Mark 25 Years of Senior Women's Softball
At Valley View Fields in Bloomington, Minnesota, a group of women is not just playing softball; they are fulfilling a lifelong aspiration.
Celebrating 25 seasons as the Minnesota Lady Loons, these athletes are reclaiming their youth in a sport that once felt out of reach before Title IX.
"Being able to compete at our age is a bonus," remarked Cheryl King, a founding member of the team.
The Lady Loons' roster features players aged between 70 and 84, showcasing an impressive range of experience and dedication.
"I proudly embrace my role as the matriarch at 84," shared Joann Rolling, a former fast pitch player who has been part of the team since its inception.
Rolling has not missed a season since she first stepped onto a ballpark at age 12.
"If you don't use it, you lose it, so I'm using it," she stated. "Iβm amazed that I can still do this at my age."
While competition fuels their passion, the bonds formed on and off the field are what truly resonate with these women.
"It's like having a second family," Rolling explained. "When I had shoulder surgery a couple of years ago, several teammates stayed with me and offered their support."
For King, the team provided solace during her recent loss, as she coped with her husband's passing.
"They comforted me during that tough time. We support each other through everything," King noted.
In 2022, this remarkable group made history by becoming the first senior team, male or female, inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame.
Softball enriches their lives socially and physically, serving as a testament to their resilience.
"Everyone has aches and pains, yet we return stronger each time," Rolling added.
The Lady Loons are set to compete in the National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa, marking their 12th appearance against senior players nationwide.
Interestingly, their fans have affectionately dubbed themselves "The Loon-atics."
