Aug 07 2025

CJ Abrams delivered a clutch single in the ninth inning, bringing home Robert Hassell III and securing a 2-1 victory for the Washington Nationals against the Athletics on Wednesday night, effectively ending their six-game losing streak.

Starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs of the Athletics dominated early, retiring the first 15 batters he faced. However, Riley Adams changed the momentum in the sixth inning, launching a leadoff home run that tied the game at one.

In a pivotal moment, Hassell doubled off reliever Michael Kelly (2-1) to kick off the ninth. Adams followed with a single, capitalizing on an errant throw from left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, allowing Hassell to score.

Soderstrom had initially put the Athletics on the board, hitting his 20th home run to start the sixth inning.

In a noteworthy return, Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli made his second career start nearly three years after his major league debut, following Tommy John surgery. He impressed with 4 1/3 scoreless innings, leaving the mound to a standing ovation from the home crowd.

Jose A. Ferrer (3-3) sealed the win for the Nationals by pitching a flawless inning in relief.
