As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, North Texas is stepping into the spotlight with fresh insights into its role in this monumental event. With just one year remaining until the opening match, excitement is building.
AT&T Stadium in Arlington is set to host nine matches, officially recognized by FIFA as "Dallas Stadium." However, local organizers are advocating for a name change to either "Arlington Dallas Stadium" or "Dallas Arlington Stadium." This proposed adjustment aims to honor Arlington while still leveraging Dallas's global brand. The outcome of this request remains undecided, igniting discussions among community leaders and soccer enthusiasts.
The World Cup's influence will ripple through the region, extending beyond the confines of the stadium. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas is designated as the International Broadcast Center, expected to welcome a multitude of media representatives from around the world.
Moreover, six base camp locations are being established across North Texas, including TCU, UNT, Dallas Baptist University, Toyota Stadium, Mansfield Stadium, and the University of Dallas in Irving. These sites will provide essential training and accommodation for teams, staff, and media in the lead-up to their matches.
A vibrant 39-day fan festival is also on the agenda, promising to infuse the region with energy and excitement throughout the tournament. This festival aims to attract global fans and highlight the cultural richness of North Texas.
Monica Paul, president of the North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee, spoke passionately about the event during a recent press conference at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. "The passion, the energy of soccer... They are here to celebrate sport and culture that goes along with it, so we're very excited to welcome the world to Dallas," she stated.
Paul further revealed updated projections indicating that the World Cup could generate between $1.5 and $2.1 billion in economic impact for the region. Notably, over half of the anticipated visitors are expected to arrive from outside the United States.
Safety and security are paramount concerns as well. Coordination efforts are currently underway between FIFA and various state and federal agencies to ensure a secure and seamless experience for all attendees.
The inaugural match at AT&T Stadium is slated for June 14, 2026, marking a significant milestone for North Texas as it prepares to host this prestigious global event.
