Panthers Dominate Hurricanes 5-0, Seize 2-0 Series Lead

May 22 2025

Florida's Sam Bennett lit up the scoreboard with two goals, including a crucial strike in the final minute of the second period, as the Panthers overwhelmed the Carolina Hurricanes 5-0 on Thursday night. This victory not only showcased their offensive prowess but also solidified their 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference final.

The Panthers set the tone early, netting three goals in the first period. Alongside Bennett, Gustav Forsling and Matthew Tkachuk contributed to the scoring frenzy, while Carter Verhaeghe stood out with three assists. The opening 20 minutes were a clear statement from the reigning Stanley Cup champions.

Bennett's second goal came after a prolonged shift in Carolina's zone, taking advantage of a broken stick by Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns. Aleksander Barkov capped off the scoring midway through the third period, further emphasizing Florida's dominance.

Sergei Bobrovsky was instrumental in this shutout, making 17 saves and achieving his third playoff shutout this year, marking the sixth of his career. The Panthers' defense effectively stifled a Hurricanes offense that typically generates numerous shots but struggled to find openings.

Florida had already claimed home-ice advantage with a 5-2 win in Game 1, a rematch of last year's conference final where they swept Carolina with four one-goal victories. With this latest win, the Panthers have tightened their grip on the series as they prepare to host Game 3 on Saturday night.

On the flip side, the Hurricanes faced a disheartening defeat, suffering their 14th consecutive loss in a conference final dating back to previous sweeps in 2009, 2019, and last year's series against Florida. Their performance was lackluster, managing only three shots in the first period and seven through two periods, leading to frustrated chants from their home crowd urging them to "Shoot the puck!"

Carolina briefly ignited hope when Sebastian Aho scored early in the second period, narrowing the gap to 3-1. However, that goal was overturned after Florida successfully challenged for offsides, revealing that Burns' stick-check had inadvertently sent the puck back into their zone.

As the game progressed into the third period, Carolina made a goaltending change, pulling veteran Frederik Andersen in favor of backup Pyotr Kochetkov. The decision reflected their struggle to regain momentum against a relentless Panthers squad.

However, not all news was positive for Florida; veteran forward Sam Reinhart exited the game in the first period after sustaining a leg injury from Aho's hit, leaving his status uncertain for upcoming games.

As both teams prepare for Game 3, the Panthers look to maintain their momentum while the Hurricanes seek to rebound from this significant setback.
