Pirates Edge Giants 6-5 Amid Wisenhunt's MLB Debut

Jul 29 2025

Andrew McCutchen's decisive home run propelled the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-5 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, marking the Pirates' third consecutive win. This game was particularly notable as it featured the major league debut of Giants' top pitching prospect, Carson Wisenhunt.

McCutchen's 10th homer of the season, and the 329th of his career, came in the seventh inning, giving the Pirates a crucial 6-4 lead.

Wisenhunt faced challenges early, surrendering a home run to Nick Gonzales on just his third pitch. He allowed three additional runs in the second inning but rebounded to pitch three scoreless innings, exiting after five frames with the game tied at 4-4. The 24-year-old left-hander recorded five hits allowed, two walks, and three strikeouts during his debut.

In the second inning, Isiah Kiner-Falefa contributed significantly with a two-run double and later scored on Tommy Pham's single, establishing a 4-1 lead for the Pirates. However, the Giants responded with two runs in their half of the second and leveled the score with Willy Adames' second RBI hit in the fourth.

Yohan Ramírez (1-0), the third pitcher used by the Pirates, earned the win, while David Bednar secured his 17th save of the season in the ninth inning. Mitch Keller had a notably brief outing, completing only two innings with 73 pitches thrown.

Adames stood out for San Francisco with three hits, while Carson Seymour (0-1) took the loss after allowing McCutchen's pivotal homer.

Bednar faced some difficulty in the ninth, yielding three hits and a run before sealing the game by getting Patrick Bailey to ground out, extending his streak of consecutive saves to 17—the longest active streak in Major League Baseball.

The Giants now find themselves just one game above .500 for the first time since their third game of the season.

Looking ahead, Pirates' left-hander Bailey Falter (7-5, 3.82) is set to face Giants' right-hander Justin Verlander (1-8, 4.70) on Tuesday.
