Pride Bowl Flag Football Tournament Kicks Off at Chicago Lakefront

As the sun rises over Montrose Beach, the excitement builds for the Pride Bowl flag football tournament, a prelude to Chicago's vibrant Pride Parade on Sunday. This annual event, organized by the Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association, attracts athletes from across the nation.

With 32 open+ teams and 24 women's+ teams competing in seven divisions, the tournament boasts over 800 players, many of whom are former collegiate athletes. Each participant brings a fierce competitive spirit and a deep sense of pride to the field.

Since its inception in 2008, the Pride Bowl has served as a vital connection point for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. The shared passion for football and camaraderie among players and fans alike creates an electric atmosphere.

The Chicago Bears have shown their commitment to the event over the past two years, providing support through donations and volunteer efforts, further enhancing the tournament's growth and visibility.

Round robin play commenced Friday morning, setting the stage for an intense playoff bracket on Saturday, where champions will be determined in each division. Players express what makes this tournament unique and meaningful.

"Winning the Pride Bowl is a badge of honor. It's our second biggest national tournament of the year," stated Logan Oppegard, captain of the Chicago Blaze. His words resonate with the spirit of competition that defines this event.

"We play for our home turf. This is our tournament. It's Pride Weekend. We bring a lot of that energy to this tournament, and that's why we're playing out here today, and that's why we want to rep Chicago well," added Katy Oldach, a player for the Chicago Sparks.

In addition to competing in the tournament, local teams will also participate in the Pride Parade on Sunday, further showcasing their pride and unity within the community.
