Rangers Pull Off Epic Comeback to Defeat Panthers 5-3
In a thrilling showdown on Monday night, Vincent Trocheck netted a short-handed goal early in the third period against his former team, leading the New York Rangers to a 5-3 victory over the Florida Panthers.
Trocheck, marking his 800th game, delivered the pivotal goal during a remarkable Rangers comeback. Prior to this match, the Rangers had struggled significantly, holding a dismal record of 0-30-1 when trailing by two or more goals. They were the only team in the NHL without a win in such situations this season.
However, the tide turned when Juuso Parssinen and J.T. Miller scored just 1:38 apart late in the second period, leveling the game after the Rangers found themselves down 3-1. Matt Rempe and Jonny Brodzinski also contributed to the scoreline, showcasing the team's resilience.
On the other side, Sam Reinhart shone for Florida, scoring twice, while Carter Verhaeghe added another goal. Aleksander Barkov was instrumental, providing two assists in the match.
This loss solidifies Florida's position in third place in the Atlantic Division, meaning they will kick off the Stanley Cup playoffs on the road.
During the game, Florida fans honored retiring Rangers broadcaster Sam Rosen with a heartfelt ovation during a first-period stoppage when he appeared on the video screens. Panthers coach Paul Maurice and general manager Bill Zito also paid tribute to Rosen, marking his final road game.
Looking ahead, the Panthers are aiming for a win against Tampa Bay on Tuesday to secure 100 points for the third time in four seasons. Remarkably, they only reached the 100-point milestone once in the franchise's first 27 seasons.
Trocheck's powerful shot from the left circle came during a stretch where Florida struggled to maintain possession during their power play, allowing the Rangers to capitalize on the opportunity.
For the second consecutive year, the Panthers have five players who scored 20 goals, with Verhaeghe joining Reinhart, Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and Sam Bennett in this elite group, mirroring last year's lineup.
The Rangers will conclude their season at home on Thursday against Tampa Bay, while Florida will visit the Lightning on Tuesday to wrap up their regular season.
