Red Sox Trade Rafael Devers to Giants in Major Deal

Jun 16 2025

On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox executed a significant trade, sending star third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. This decision came shortly after Devers played a pivotal role in a three-game sweep against the New York Yankees, marking a surprising shift in the team's roster.

Devers, who has spent his entire nine-year career with the Red Sox, recently signed a monumental 10-year, $313.5 million contract in 2023. The Giants will assume full responsibility for this contract, as reported by various sources.

As a three-time All-Star, Devers was considered the cornerstone of the Red Sox franchise, especially after securing the largest contract in the team's history. His performance this season included 15 home runs and 58 RBIs, contributing to a .271/.400/.494 batting line through 72 games. Notably, he hit a solo home run in Boston's recent victory over the Yankees, which turned out to be his last hit for the team.

However, Devers' tenure in Boston was not without its challenges. Tensions arose during the 2025 season when he expressed dissatisfaction with being moved to designated hitter following the signing of veteran Alex Bregman. His reluctance to play first base after an injury sidelined teammate Tristan Casas led to intervention from team owner John Henry and president Sam Kennedy during a series in Kansas City.

Now, Devers heads to San Francisco, where he will face his former team when the Red Sox visit for a three-game series from June 20-22.

In exchange for Devers, Boston acquires a package that includes three pitchers and a position player. Right-hander Jordan Hicks and left-hander Kyle Harrison are among those joining the Red Sox.

Hicks, 28, has struggled this season with a record of 1-5 and a 6.47 ERA over 13 appearances, currently sidelined due to a toe injury. Over the past two seasons with San Francisco, he started 29 games, compiling a career record of 16-33 with a 4.23 ERA across seven years with the Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Harrison, 23, has made four starts this season with a record of 1-1 and a 4.56 ERA. Last year, he started 24 games and finished with a 7-7 record alongside a similar ERA and WHIP.

Additionally, Boston received 20-year-old right-handed pitcher Jose Bello, who boasts an impressive 2.00 ERA in rookie ball this season. The trade also includes first baseman/outfielder James Tibbs III, ranked as San Francisco's No. 4 prospect. Tibbs III was selected 13th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft from Florida State.
