Cubs Edge Pirates 2-1 Behind Swanson's Homer and Boyd's Strong Start

Jun 14 2025

Dansby Swanson's sixth-inning homer propelled the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, showcasing both offensive power and solid pitching.

Swanson's solo shot off Ryan Borucki (1-3) marked his 13th home run of the season, breaking a tie and sending the ball soaring into the left-center bleachers. Earlier in the game, he had struck out twice against Mike Burrows, who exited after allowing a popup to Seiya Suzuki for the first out of the sixth.

Andrew McCutchen provided the lone highlight for last-place Pittsburgh, hitting his 18th career homer at Wrigley Field, a record for active players visiting the iconic venue. Despite McCutchen's efforts, the Pirates were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

Matthew Boyd (6-3) delivered a stellar performance, retiring 14 consecutive batters after McCutchen's first-inning blast. The left-hander, who joined the Cubs on a $29 million, two-year contract, has been particularly effective at home, boasting a 6-0 record with a 2.25 ERA in six starts this season.

Following Boyd's departure, Chicago's bullpen held strong. Ryan Pressly and Drew Pomeranz each recorded three outs, while Daniel Palencia closed out the game for his sixth save. The Pirates threatened in the seventh with three hits against Pressly but failed to score. A double play erased McCutchen's leadoff single, and Henry Davis struck out looking with two runners on base.

The Cubs improved their record to 6-6 during a grueling stretch of 13 games in 13 days. After an off day on Monday, they will face another series of consecutive games.

Mitch Keller (1-9, 4.15 ERA) is set to start for Pittsburgh on Sunday, while Chicago counters with right-hander Colin Rea (4-2, 3.92 ERA).
