Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle is channeling his recent NFL fine into a charitable cause, launching a GoFundMe page to support children in need.
The fine, which Dowdle revealed on November 5, followed a touchdown celebration against the Green Bay Packers on November 2. The 27-year-old's hip thrusts, reminiscent of a popular Key & Peele sketch, resulted in a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
His agent, David Canter, announced plans to appeal the fine, reported to be $14,491. “After much thought I’ve launched a GoFundMe for my fines,” Dowdle stated on the fundraising page. “Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL disagrees.”
However, the initiative is not solely about covering his fine. “Actually, 100% of what is raised through this fundraiser will be sent to Children’s Home Society of North Carolina,” he clarified. This organization focuses on providing safe and loving homes for children through various programs.

As of Friday afternoon, the GoFundMe had surpassed $25,000, showcasing significant community support. In the original Key & Peele sketch, players are penalized for exceeding two thrusts during celebrations, a humorous take that resonated with fans.
“Rico, man you got robbed,” said Keegan-Michael Key in an Instagram video following the game. “You only did two pumps. I’m sorry, man. Now I’m going to have to write a new sketch.”
Support poured in from fans and teammates alike, including Jonathan Stewart, the Panthers’ all-time rushing leader, who responded with laughter on social media.
Dowdle expressed his surprise at the fundraiser's success. “It was a joke at first,” he remarked. “It turned into something much bigger... Thankfully, everybody was able to actually donate to a greater cause.”
He noted that other players have performed similar celebrations without facing penalties. For instance, Aaron Rodgers executed a comparable move in 2020 without repercussions.
Regardless of the outcome of his fine appeal, Dowdle is poised for a lucrative future. He signed a one-year deal worth $2.7 million with the Panthers in March and is enjoying a breakout season with four rushing touchdowns and impressive yardage.
His performance against the Packers highlighted his potential, as he rushed for two touchdowns and accumulated 130 yards, marking one of his best games this year.
