Rookie Linebacker Mike Green Aims to Make His Mark with the Ravens

Jul 29 2025

Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Mike Green is making strides in his inaugural NFL training camp, eager to establish himself as a key player.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed by pass-rushing coach Chuck Smith, who remarked on Green's potential. "Mike's a rookie, so he has to play his position, get in line like any other rookie. But he's competing at a high level. He can rush and is strong at the point of attack," Smith stated.

Selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft as the 59th overall pick, Green was viewed by some analysts as a first-round talent. However, off-field allegations may have contributed to his draft position.

Despite this, Green feels fortunate to be with the Ravens. "We're all blessed to be out here and practice another day. It has been great so far," he expressed.

During his college career at Marshall University, Green led the nation with 17 sacks in 2024 after transferring from the University of Virginia. He acknowledges that while he has shown promise, there remains significant room for growth.

Green's first opportunity to compete against an opponent will come during joint practices and a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on August 5 and 7. "Finally putting on the pads has allowed me to showcase my power rushing and edge-setting abilities," he noted.

He is committed to contributing to the team in any capacity, even if it means starting on special teams. "Fulfilling my role, regardless of what it is—whether that's special teams or being a dominant player on defense—is my focus," Green said.

Currently, he ranks second on the depth chart behind Odafe Oweh and ahead of Adisa Isaac. Green is also learning from seasoned defensive players like Roquan Smith, Kyle Van Noy, and Tavius Robinson.

"With talented defensive ends and linebackers on the front line, teams can't game plan for all of us. They have to pick certain players to focus on, which opens opportunities for others," Green explained. "I believe I can provide an advantage since teams may not know much about me yet."

A native of Williamsburg, Virginia, Green graduated from Lafayette High School, the same institution that produced Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor. He recently celebrated his 22nd birthday on July 28.
