Sachem North Softball Team Sets New Record Ahead of Playoffs

May 23 2025

Sachem North softball has reached an unprecedented milestone, finishing the season with a remarkable 15-4 league record, the best in the program's history.

Manager Ken Sasso reflected on the achievement, stating, “You kind of don’t realize what you’re in until it’s over. But when we won that 15th game, and I looked back at our record, I’m like, ‘Wow, we never won 15 games in-league.’”

As the team gears up for a playoff clash against Half Hollow Hills this Friday, sophomore catcher Delaney Mathes stands out with an impressive batting average of .685.

However, Mathes remains focused on team success rather than personal accolades, especially after last year's disappointing second-round exit against Sachem East. “I definitely want to win the county… especially just to make it farther than last year would be really great,” she expressed.

The team is known for its high-energy play style, which they aim to maintain throughout the playoffs.

“There’s never a down moment,” said third baseman Brooke Giordano. Junior pitcher Dani Brennan added that the atmosphere intensifies when the bats are hot. “Everyone is always on the fence and we’re always cheering,” she noted. “That’s what makes us different from the other teams, because I don’t think they cheer as well as we do.”

Coaches emphasize mental preparation over mechanical skills, a strategy that junior shortstop Bella Kriklava appreciates. “They’re helping us stay in the right state of mind,” she said, eager to pursue a championship.

The Class B softball title series kicks off with top seed Carle Place (16-5) facing third seed East Rockaway (14-4) at Farmingdale State College at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

In baseball, No. 1 seed Wantagh (19-3) will visit No. 2 seed Wheatley (18-3-1) for Game 2 of the semifinals on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
