Savannah Guthrie Reflects on Her 'Awkward' Interview with Jalen Hurts

May 20 2025

So, Savannah Guthrie's got some thoughts about that interview she did with Jalen Hurts, and let’s just say, she’s not exactly proud of it. During a recent episode of Today, she made it clear that she didn’t actually ask the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback if it felt good to execute the infamous 'tush push.' “I just want to say, I did not ask Jalen Hurts if it felt good with the tush push,” the 53-year-old journalist said. “That was a deep fake. I don’t think it actually happened. There was a context.”

Now, if you’re not familiar, the 'tush push' is basically a quarterback sneak that the Eagles have turned into their signature move over the last few seasons. Guthrie was referring to her chat with Hurts back in February, right after the Eagles snagged the Super Bowl LIX title. During that interview, her cohost Carson Daly brought up the play, and things got a little... well, cringey.

“It’s as cringey now as it was then. Career lowlight,” Guthrie admitted, looking back on the moment. And it wasn’t just talk; they actually did a full-on demonstration of the play. “Jalen, how does it work? I’ll be [Eagles center] Cam Jurgens,” Daly said, while Guthrie got behind him to “push.”

They really went for it, asking Hurts to coach them through the move while Daly threw in some logistical questions. Hurts, sitting there in his chair, just laughed politely, probably wondering what he got himself into. “It is just straight strength, pushing, driving through your legs,” he explained, trying to keep it professional.

After their attempt at the demonstration, Guthrie couldn’t help but poke fun at Daly. “Well, your tush, I felt like it was pushable,” she joked, before turning to Hurts and asking, “Do you have to kind of have the right…?”

Daly jumped in, clearly confused, and Guthrie just shrugged it off, saying, “I don’t know, it just felt good to kind of push you over.” Then she asked Hurts if it felt “kind of good” for him to show off that strength on the field. Hurts, ever the professional, replied, “Eh, no thoughts. Just trying to win the game, that’s all.”

In case you didn’t know, Jason Kelce, the Eagles’ center, has been pretty vocal about his role in the tush push play before he retires in 2024. Earlier this year, former NFL star Ryan Fitzpatrick posed a pretty wild question: what’s harder, giving birth or executing the tush push? Kelce didn’t hold back, saying, “Oh man, hate to say, but it isn’t even close. I’ll take an entire career of tush pushes over giving birth. F*** that.”

And here’s the kicker: the NFL is actually considering banning the tush push. Team owners are meeting this week to decide if this controversial move should remain part of the game. So, who knows? This whole thing might just become a thing of the past.
