Simone Biles Addresses Controversy Over Trans Athlete Debate

Jun 10 2025

Simone Biles has responded to the heated exchange that erupted on social media with former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, igniting a broader discussion about the participation of trans athletes in competitive sports.

On June 10, Biles articulated her stance via X, stating, “I’ve always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport.” She acknowledged the current system's shortcomings, which often lead to frustration and conflict. “It didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for,” she added.

In her message, the 11-time Olympic medalist emphasized the complexity of the issues at hand. “These are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don’t have the answers or solutions to,” she noted, advocating for empathy and respect as foundational elements in the discourse.

Biles clarified her position, asserting she was “not advocating for policies that compromise fairness in women’s sports.” Her concern lies in the public scrutiny directed at young athletes. “Individual athletes — especially kids — should never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over,” she stated. She urged sports organizations to develop rules that support inclusion while ensuring fair competition.

In response, Gaines, now a contributor to Outkick, accepted Biles’ apology but reiterated her own views on the matter. “I know she knows what this feels like,” Gaines remarked on June 10. “Sports ARE inclusive by nature. Anyone can and everyone SHOULD play sports. Competition, on the other hand and by definition, is exclusive.” She challenged the notion of “competitive equity,” deeming it nonsensical.

Gaines further asserted that women’s sports should not be a platform for prioritizing the feelings of men and boys over female athletes. “I welcome you to the fight to support fair sports and a future for female athletes,” she declared, emphasizing that young girls deserve equal opportunities.

The exchange between Biles and Gaines began on June 6 when Gaines claimed a Minnesota high school softball team won a championship due to their “star player is a boy.” Biles responded sharply, accusing Gaines of being a “sore loser” and suggesting that she should uplift the trans community instead of bullying them. “Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!!” Biles proposed.

Gaines, who has become a prominent advocate against trans women competing in women’s sports, previously faced off against Lia Thomas, the first openly trans woman champion in NCAA women’s division history. In another post, Biles challenged Gaines to “bully someone your own size,” implying that her criticisms were misplaced.

Gaines quickly countered, accusing Biles of “body shaming” and expressing disappointment in her stance. “My take is the least controversial take on the planet,” she wrote. “Simone Biles being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls’ dreams? Didn’t have that on my bingo card.”

The ongoing dialogue reflects the complexities surrounding gender identity and competitive sports, with both athletes standing firm in their beliefs while navigating public scrutiny.
