Sisters Aim to Revitalize Bowling with Historic Achievements

Two sisters from the Chicago suburbs are redefining the landscape of high school bowling. Olivia Cameron and Chanel Edwards have made significant strides in their respective schools, aiming to elevate the sport's profile through their remarkable achievements.

Olivia Cameron's journey began in seventh grade, evolving from a casual pastime into a serious commitment. Recently, she concluded a standout career at Fenwick High School, where her impact was felt immediately.

"Bowling chose me; everything that came with it is kind of just a gift from God," Cameron reflected on her unexpected passion for the sport.

Her sophomore year marked a pivotal moment as she became Fenwick's first female bowler to qualify for the state finals, a feat she would repeat for three consecutive years.

Younger sister Chanel has always looked up to Olivia. "She inspired me to take bowling seriously. We both got better together," Edwards shared, highlighting the sibling bond that fuels their competitive spirit.

Chanel began her bowling career in eighth grade and recently completed her junior season at Neuqua Valley High School, also competing at the state tournament.

"I was one of the first bowlers to go to state in 20 years. Watching Olivia prepared me for my own experience," Edwards explained, emphasizing the importance of mentorship within their family.

The sisters maintain a supportive rivalry. "At first, she didn't like it, but now we help each other out," Cameron noted, showcasing their collaborative approach to competition.

Coached by Marty Miller, who has led five teams to state championships, both sisters have benefited from his expertise. "Chanel was ecstatic when she qualified for state, shooting a 267. Olivia's proudest moment was a near-perfect 298 during her freshman year," Miller recounted.

He recognized their dedication early on. "It takes time and commitment to excel in bowling. They both have what it takes to go far," he stated.

While both sisters share talent, their styles differ. "Chanel excels in form; Olivia is all about knocking down pins," Miller described, illustrating their unique strengths.

Looking ahead, Cameron is set to attend Morgan State University on a full scholarship next year. Edwards aspires to continue bowling in college and serve as a role model for others.

"I want to grow the sport of bowling and attract more participants. It deserves more attention," Edwards asserted, advocating for increased visibility in the sport.

"Just give it a try. If you don't like it, that's fine. I didn't enjoy it at first, but as I improved, my appreciation grew," Cameron advised potential bowlers.

With their impressive records and dedication, it's clear that Olivia Cameron and Chanel Edwards are passionate about bowling. Cameron has played a crucial role in expanding Fenwick's program from four girls during her early years to fully-fledged junior varsity and varsity teams this year. Both sisters are actively participating in tournaments and gearing up for junior gold championships this summer.
