In January 2024, Belichick announced his departure from the Patriots, despite having signed a long-term contract extension just a year prior. This decision came after a disappointing season that saw the team finish with a 4-13 record. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Legal troubles soon followed. In April 2025, Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, sought trademarks for several of his catchphrases, which were already owned by Kraft. They added “(Bill’s Version)” to these phrases, echoing Taylor Swift's strategy of re-recording her music. However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled against them in September 2025, citing potential consumer confusion.
Their relationship began in 1996 when Belichick joined the Patriots as an assistant coach under Bill Parcells. Together, they led the team to an AFC Championship win but fell short in Super Bowl XXXI. Both left for the New York Jets in 1997, but Belichick's tenure there was short-lived.
