Thunder Dominate Timberwolves, Seize 2-0 Lead in Western Conference Finals

May 23 2025

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, fresh off his MVP accolade, lit up the scoreboard with 38 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder triumphed over the Minnesota Timberwolves 118-103 on Thursday night, securing a commanding 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals.

With a shooting performance that included 12 of 21 from the field and 13 of 15 from the charity stripe, Gilgeous-Alexander showcased his skills after receiving his MVP trophy from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver just before tip-off. He complemented his scoring with eight assists and three steals, further solidifying his impact on the game.

Jalen Williams contributed significantly with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Chet Holmgren added 22 points to the Thunder's offensive onslaught. Earlier in the day, Lu Dort earned first-team All-Defense honors and Williams was recognized as second-team All-Defense, both pivotal in limiting Minnesota to a mere 41.4% shooting.

For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards managed to score 32 points but required 26 attempts to do so. Jaden McDaniels and Nickeil Walker-Alexander chipped in with 22 and 17 points, respectively, but their efforts fell short against Oklahoma City's defensive prowess.

The series shifts to Minneapolis for Game 3 on Saturday, where the Timberwolves will look to bounce back. In the first half, Gilgeous-Alexander's late 3-pointer and subsequent free throws propelled Oklahoma City to a 58-50 lead at halftime, having scored 19 points before the break.

In a highlight moment during the third quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander drove into the paint, converting a challenging shot while drawing a foul from his cousin, Alexander-Walker. He completed the three-point play, extending the Thunder's lead to 73-64.

A fast break lob from Cason Wallace to Holmgren culminated in a two-handed dunk, pushing Oklahoma City's advantage to 82-65 late in the third quarter. The Thunder entered the final period with a comfortable 93-71 lead, showcasing their dominance throughout the game.
