Travis Kelce Sparks Controversy with National Anthem Antics

Oct 29 2025

Travis Kelce's antics during the national anthem before Monday Night Football have ignited a heated discussion online. A clip showcasing his behavior alongside Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gone viral, drawing attention from fans and critics alike.

On October 28, a TikTok shared by ESPN captured the moment, featuring a contrasting scene: Mahomes, 30, standing stoically while Kelce, 36, bounced around and performed toe taps on the sidelines before their game against the Washington Commanders on October 27.

The video, which has amassed over 1.3 million views, prompted a flurry of comments regarding the appropriateness of Kelce's actions. One viewer remarked, “Kelce needs to be more respectful,” while another labeled him “disturbing and disrespectful.”

Critics continued to voice their disapproval, with one comment stating, “Be more respectful and stop jumping around. I know your mama raised you better. Trashy!!!” Yet, amidst the backlash, many fans defended Kelce's exuberance.

“As a military vet spouse and someone with ADHD, this doesn’t bother me,” one supporter wrote. “His hand is over his heart; he’s bouncing in place. It was cold, and he has to run. No disrespect in my opinion.” Another added, “His hand is over his heart. Who cares if he’s warming up his legs a little during it? People are just looking for disrespect wherever they can.”

Some attributed Kelce’s behavior to his eagerness to play. “Kelce just ready to play,” one fan commented, while another humorously likened him to “an excited Labrador Retriever.”

On the field, Kelce showcased his skills against the Commanders, achieving a season-high 99 receiving yards on eight receptions as the Chiefs triumphed 28-7. With a touchdown in the third quarter, he tied Kansas City legend Priest Holmes for the most receptions in franchise history.

“I just cherish these moments,” Kelce expressed in an interview with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt post-game. “Coming out here, being able to play in front of Chiefs Kingdom at Arrowhead. This place is special, man. I love it here.”

He continued, “I’m just the old lucky dog that’s still able to do this thing. I’m putting on the pads like I’m 15 years old again. I’m loving every single bit of it.”

Mahomes praised Kelce during his postgame remarks, highlighting his significance to the team. “He’s the true Chiefs Chief,” Mahomes stated. “He has helped set the culture of what it means to play for coach Reid and to play in Kansas City.”

As Kelce approaches the opportunity to break Holmes’ all-time franchise receptions record, he will have a chance to do so when the Chiefs face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, November 2.
