Twins Triumph Over Cubs 4-2 Despite Buxton's Injury

Jul 10 2025

In a decisive matchup, the Minnesota Twins secured a 4-2 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night, propelled by early runs from Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Correa, each contributing an RBI in the first inning for the second consecutive game.

Matt Wallner's solo home run in the third inning added to the Twins' lead, providing enough cushion for right-hander David Festa, who pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs in the fourth.

The bullpen showcased its strength, delivering 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Closer Jhoan Duran, returning from illness that sidelined him the previous day, notched his 14th save of the season.

However, the night was marred by an injury to All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton. After being struck on the hand during the first inning, Buxton initially continued playing but exited in the second. The team later confirmed he suffered a left hand contusion.

Cubs starter Cade Horton struggled, failing to complete five innings for the third time in his last four starts. He was pulled after 4 2/3 innings, having given up four runs on six hits.

In a strategic play, the Twins added an insurance run in the fourth when Royce Lewis crossed home plate while Wallner expertly extended a rundown between first and second base.

The severity of Buxton's injury remains uncertain, raising concerns about his availability for upcoming games and potentially impacting his participation in the Home Run Derby during All-Star weekend in Georgia.

Before his injury, Buxton successfully stole his 17th base of the season, maintaining a perfect record on steal attempts this year.

Looking ahead, Cubs will send RHP Colin Rea (6-3, 4.13 ERA) to the mound for the series finale, while the Twins will counter with RHP Chris Paddack (3-7, 4.64).
