Astros Edge Phillies in Pitching Duel as Hummel's Homer Seals the Game
In a tightly contested matchup, Cooper Hummel launched a solo home run in the eighth inning, propelling the Houston Astros to a 1-0 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. The Astros' pitching staff, led by Framber Valdez, combined for a four-hitter, showcasing their dominance on the mound.
With one out in the eighth, Hummel connected with Ranger Suárez's pitch, sending it deep into the right-center field bullpen. This pivotal moment marked Hummel's second home run since his promotion from Triple-A Sugar Land on June 14.
Valdez delivered an impressive performance, allowing just four hits over seven scoreless innings. Bryan Abreu contributed in the eighth with a strikeout, while Josh Hader secured his 20th save by striking out two batters in the ninth.
The Phillies had a promising opportunity to score in the sixth inning. J.T. Realmuto reached base due to a throwing error by third baseman Isaac Paredes and subsequently stole second. However, after Valdez issued a walk to Otto Kemp, Edmundo Sosa grounded into a double play, extinguishing the threat.
Houston's offense was quiet until Yainer Diaz broke through with a single to right field in the sixth. Hummel followed suit with another single, but Mauricio Dubón's double play left Diaz stranded at third. Suárez managed to walk Jeremy Peña before striking out Paredes to escape the inning unscathed.
Suárez's performance was commendable; he allowed four hits and one run while striking out seven batters over 7 2/3 innings. Notably, he became the first Philadelphia starter since Aaron Harang in 2015 to achieve nine consecutive quality starts within his first ten outings of the season, according to statistics from the Elias Sport Bureau.
Looking ahead, Philadelphia's right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.81 ERA) is set to face off against left-hander Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.54) as the series continues on Wednesday night.
