Mets Smash Seven Homers to End Losing Streak Against Phillies
On Saturday night, the New York Mets unleashed a barrage of power, hitting seven solo home runs to secure an 11-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, effectively ending their seven-game losing streak.
Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo each contributed two home runs, while Francisco Lindor, Jared Young, and Francisco Alvarez also joined the home run party. Lindor's performance included three RBIs, and Soto's impressive night featured four hits and four RBIs, propelling the Mets to a tie with Philadelphia at the top of the NL East with a record of 46-31.
For the Phillies, Alec Bohm managed two hits and an RBI, but the team faced only their second loss in the last ten games.
Griffin Canning (7-3) delivered a solid performance, pitching into the sixth inning. The Mets' bullpen, featuring Huascar Brazobán, Ryne Stanek, and Chris Devenski, held Philadelphia scoreless over the final three innings.
The Mets ignited their offense in the third inning when Lindor led off with a home run, marking the beginning of three consecutive homers off pitcher Mick Abel (2-1). After breaking a 0-for-20 slump with his drive to center field, Nimmo followed with a homer to right before Soto added another to make it 4-3. This marked the first time since October 4, 2022, that New York homered in three straight at-bats.
In the fifth inning, Soto extended the lead with a powerful 437-foot blast off Joe Ross, showcasing his ability to capitalize on an 84 mph curveball.
Canning rebounded from two previous outings where he allowed ten earned runs over 9 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and six hits in five-plus innings against Philadelphia.
Abel struggled on the mound, lasting only three innings while allowing four runs and six hits.
Nimmo's first homer in the opening inning set the tone for the Mets' offensive explosion after a challenging stretch. Prior to this game, New York had been swept in a three-game series against Tampa Bay at home and Atlanta before suffering a 10-2 defeat in Friday's series opener against Philadelphia.
Notably, the Mets have now won 28 consecutive games when Lindor homers, a streak that began on July 9 of last year. This impressive run is just one shy of the major league record held by the Brooklyn Dodgers, who won 29 games in a row when Carl Furillo went deep from 1951-53. The Mets have achieved seven home runs in a game five times, with four of those instances occurring at Citizens Bank Park.
Looking ahead, Mets left-hander David Peterson (5-2, 2.60 ERA) is set to face off against left-hander Jesús Luzardo (6-3, 4.41) in the series finale on Sunday night.
