Jul 13 2025

In a decisive game, the Oakland Athletics defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Sunday, powered by two-run homers from Tyler Soderstrom, Nick Kurtz, and Austin Wynns.

Jeffrey Springs (8-6) delivered a solid performance, pitching 6 2/3 innings while allowing three runs. He recorded five strikeouts and did not issue any walks, showcasing his control on the mound.

This victory marked the A's third win in their last four games, bringing their record to 41-57 as they head into the All-Star break in their inaugural season in Sacramento.

On the other side, the Blue Jays, who lead the AL East, saw contributions from Davis Schneider and Addison Barger, both of whom hit home runs. However, Toronto struggled defensively, finishing the game with three errors and only four hits. Their record now stands at 55-41, having lost two of their last three games.

The Athletics took an early lead in the second inning. After Gio Urshela reached base with a single, Wynns launched a one-out homer to left field off pitcher José Berríos, marking his sixth of the season.

In the third inning, Kurtz hit a leadoff double, setting the stage for Soderstrom's impressive 410-foot home run to center field on a 1-2 sinker. This was Soderstrom's 18th home run, adding to his total of 12 homers in his first two major league seasons.

Toronto managed to respond in the fifth inning when Schneider hit a solo home run. However, Kurtz quickly countered in the bottom half of the inning after All-Star Jacob Wilson reached base due to a throwing error by reliever Tommy Nance.

Both Wilson and Kurtz are strong candidates for the AL Rookie of the Year award as they head into the break. Wilson boasts a .332 batting average with nine homers and 42 RBIs, while Kurtz has a .257 average with 17 homers and 44 RBIs.

Berríos (5-4) struggled during this outing, allowing four runs and five hits over three innings. Prior to this game, he had been on a roll, going 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his last four starts.
