Tigers Triumph Over Twins with Power Hitting
On Saturday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers showcased their offensive prowess, defeating the Minnesota Twins 10-5. Zach McKinstry led the charge with three hits, including one of the team's four home runs.
Joining McKinstry in the power display were Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Gleyber Torres, each contributing to the Tigers' impressive run total.
Casey Mize (8-2) delivered a solid performance on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6 2/3 innings. His five strikeouts helped him maintain a perfect 5-0 record at home this season, with a remarkable 2.00 ERA across six starts.
Bailey Ober (4-6) struggled for the Twins, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits, which included all four home runs hit by the Tigers. He managed to strike out five but walked one batter during his outing.
The scoring began in the second inning when Spencer Torkelson doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly, giving Detroit a 1-0 lead. However, Minnesota quickly responded, taking a 2-1 advantage in the third inning thanks to Byron Buxton's two-run homer. The Tigers equalized shortly after with Carpenter's homer.
In the fourth inning, Colt Keith's sacrifice fly put Detroit ahead 3-2, followed by Torres hitting a two-run homer that extended the lead.
Greene opened the fifth inning with Detroit's third home run, pushing the score to 6-2. McKinstry then added to the lead with a lead-off homer in the sixth inning, making it a five-run game.
Despite Carlos Correa's two-run homer in the eighth for Minnesota, Wenceel Pérez answered back with a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning.
Earlier in the game, the Twins nearly took the lead in the second inning, but Carpenter made a spectacular leap to prevent Ryan Jeffers' fly ball from clearing the left field fence.
Buxton's performance marked his 15th game where he homered and stole a base in the same contest, tying him with Gary Gaetti for third place on the Twins' career list.
The series concludes with a Sunday night matchup at Comerica Park—the first such game since 2017. The Twins will send RHP Chris Paddock (3-6, 4.64) to face off against Tigers ace LHP Tarik Skubal (9-2, 2.29), who boasts an impressive 9-0 record over his last 14 starts.
