Cardinals Dominate Tigers in Rain-Delayed Showdown
In a game that was as wild as the weather, the St. Louis Cardinals took down the Detroit Tigers 11-4 on Monday night. Sonny Gray was the star of the show, striking out 10 batters and tossing six scoreless innings. Meanwhile, Brendan Donovan was on fire at the plate, racking up three hits to help lead the Cardinals to victory.
Even with this loss, the Tigers are still sitting pretty with the best record in the MLB at 31-17. But let’s be real, the Cardinals are on a roll, winning 13 out of their last 15 games and outscoring their opponents 85-36 during that stretch. Talk about a hot streak!
St. Louis had a total of 16 hits in the game, with Masyn Winn, Lars Nootbaar, Alec Burleson, Iván Herrera, and Victor Scott II each contributing two hits. It was a real team effort, you know? But the game wasn’t without its interruptions; there was a 34-minute rain delay in the bottom of the seventh that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Gray, who improved to 5-1, was sharp, allowing just three hits and one walk. This was a nice bounce-back for him after a rough outing in Philadelphia where he gave up seven runs. On the flip side, Sean Guenther, making his first career major league start, faced just three batters before being pulled. Keider Montero came in but struggled, giving up five runs over 5 2/3 innings.
After the rain delay, the Cardinals exploded for six runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer from Pedro Pagés. They’ve now hit 11 home runs in their last 11 games, which is pretty impressive.
Detroit managed to score a run in the eighth and three in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Nootbaar also made a jaw-dropping catch in the fourth, leaping to snag a foul ball before crashing into the wall. It was a moment that had everyone talking.
As for the Cardinals' pitching staff, they haven’t been charged with a loss since May 2, which is a streak of 15 games. Tomorrow, LHP Tarik Skubal (4-2, 2.67 ERA) will take the mound against RHP Erick Fedde (3-3, 3.44). Should be another exciting matchup!
