Carlos Vela Retires After Stellar Career with LAFC
Carlos Vela, the former Major League Soccer MVP, confirmed his retirement on Tuesday, marking the end of an illustrious career.
At 36, Vela leaves behind a legacy at Los Angeles FC, where he was signed as the club's first designated player in 2017, even before they played their inaugural match. Over seven seasons, he became the franchise's all-time leader in goals (78), assists (59), and appearances (152). His standout moment came in 2019 when he shattered the MLS record with 34 goals in a single season.
Reflecting on his time with LAFC, Vela stated, "Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club is a highlight of my career. This club means so much to me and my family, and I am proud of everything we have accomplished together with the great fans of Los Angeles. I am excited to begin this next chapter in my journey here in LA."
Vela's contract expired after the 2023 season, and although he returned to LAFC last September for the playoffs, he only saw four minutes of action in one game. Consequently, the club opted not to re-sign him for the current season.
Residing in Los Angeles with his family, Vela was named LAFC's first Black & Gold Ambassador upon announcing his retirement. In this new capacity, he will assist in expanding the LAFC brand and fostering connections with supporters. General manager John Thorrington remarked on Vela's impact: "From the beginning, Carlos has been more than just a player — he has been the heartbeat, the captain and the face of LAFC."
Vela's journey began in Cancún, where he started his youth career with Chivas before moving to Arsenal at 16 in 2005. His time at Arsenal included several loan spells at Spanish clubs before settling at Real Sociedad for six years prior to joining LAFC.
During his tenure with LAFC, Vela earned four All-Star selections and three spots on the MLS Best XI. He holds the record as the fastest player in MLS history to reach 75 goals and 50 assists and is recognized as the top Mexican goal-scorer in league history.
Internationally, Vela represented Mexico in the World Cups of 2010 and 2018 but had a tumultuous relationship with El Tri's management, leading to his self-declared retirement from international football in 2020.
To honor his contributions, LAFC will celebrate Noche de Carlos Vela on September 21 at BMO Stadium during a match against Real Salt Lake.
