Chaminade Lacrosse Coach Jack Moran Retires After 45 Years of Excellence

Jun 13 2025

Chaminade's head lacrosse coach Jack Moran has officially announced his retirement after an impressive 45-year tenure, marked by 21 championships and 629 victories.

“I’m just going to miss the banter,” said Moran, reflecting on his time with the players. At 73, he emphasized the importance of effort, stating, “Whatever we do, do it at 100 percent effort 100 percent of the time.”

Following his announcement, Moran was inundated with messages from former players—“178 text messages and about 100 emails,” he noted—each expressing gratitude and fond memories. “I know them all,” he remarked, adding, “I probably have a story for every one of them.”

Despite stepping down as head coach, Moran will remain involved with the program in an advisory capacity. His new role will focus on player development and enhancing team depth, particularly for those who may not make the varsity squad but still aspire to play at the collegiate level.

“I’m not going to make every road trip,” he explained, looking forward to spending weekends watching his grandchildren play sports. However, he plans to attend key games, including the anticipated matchup against Delbarton.

Taking over the reins next spring will be assistant coach Gregory Kay, a 1998 graduate and the school’s chief academic officer. Moran’s Flyers last claimed a championship title in 2018, concluding his career with a hard-fought loss to archrival St. Anthony’s Friars, 16-12.

“In fact, I was happy it was St. Anthony’s,” Moran said. “Because from going out, that’s a team I want to go out with.”

Meanwhile, Carle Place’s softball team is gearing up for the state semifinals, aiming for the town's first state title in the sport. The 19-5 Long Island champions will face off against 20-3 Chatham this Friday night.

“We don’t know anything about them; we’re going in blind,” said sophomore third baseman Alexa Mifsud. Yet, the team remains composed and ready for the challenge ahead.

Junior Isabella DeGroot, who plays multiple positions including first base and pitcher, recalled their dominant performance against Cold Spring Harbor in the Nassau County games. “We conquered CSP 18-0 and then 20-0 in the best-of-three series,” she said, highlighting their confidence against any competition.

“We’re going to have to be ready for all different kinds of pitches now—and we’ve done a lot of hitting drills for that,” DeGroot added.

In another sporting event, the USA Patriots amputee softball team, also known as the National Wounded Warrior squad, is set to visit Long Island this Saturday. They will compete against local teams, the LI Senior All-Stars and LI All-Stars, at Moriches Athletic Complex with games scheduled for noon and 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
