Brandon Marsh's Late Heroics Propel Phillies Past Cubs
In a tense showdown, Brandon Marsh delivered the decisive hit in the 11th inning, driving home the winning run as the Philadelphia Phillies edged out the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Monday night. The victory came after the Phillies executed two strategic bunt hits to load the bases, showcasing their resourcefulness in a critical moment.
The Cubs had tied the game at 2 in the eighth inning when Ian Happ launched a solo homer off reliever Matt Strahm. In the 11th, Pete Crow-Armstrong put Chicago ahead 3-2 with an RBI double against Carlos Hernández (1-0), but the lead was short-lived.
J.T. Realmuto responded for Philadelphia, driving in the automatic runner with a single off Daniel Palencia (0-2), leveling the score at three. The stage was set for Marsh's heroics, but it was rookie Otto Kemp who ignited the rally. The undrafted Division II prospect recorded his third hit of the game with a crucial bunt single, followed by Bryson Stott, who also laid down a successful bunt to load the bases for Marsh.
This win was essential for the Phillies, who had just endured a three-game sweep at the hands of Pittsburgh and were struggling with a dismal 1-9 record over their last ten games, slipping from their perch atop the NL East standings.
Kemp's contributions were pivotal; he not only provided a spark with his bunting but also made his presence felt earlier in the game. After being promoted from the minors on Saturday, Kemp recorded his first hit in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a wild pickoff attempt by Cubs starter Matthew Boyd to advance to third base. He later scored on Weston Wilson's RBI single, giving Philadelphia a brief 2-1 lead.
Despite having loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, the Phillies could only manage one run to tie the game at one. Tensions escalated in the ninth when Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected for the second consecutive game, having been tossed from Sunday’s match in Detroit as well. His latest ejection came after he argued that Kemp had run out of the baseline on an infield single.
Looking ahead, the Cubs will send right-hander Colin Rea (4-2, 3.59 ERA) to face Phillies right-hander Mick Abel (1-0, 0.79) on Tuesday, as both teams seek to gain momentum in this tightly contested series.
